Digital Transformation Step 1: Digital Maturity

ENBeitrag 12
Regardless of the chosen method to develop your strategy, it is worth examining the organization’s current situation. This is best done with a maturity analysis.

A maturity analysis to determine your digital maturity is an assessment of how far an organization has come in their digital achievements. Management may be convinced that it has already achieved a lot and that digital transformation is well on track. The employees, on the other hand, may still see a lot of potential – perhaps in areas that are not currently on management’s radar.

Determining digital maturity is therefore an excellent starting point on the path to digital transformation. Following the survey, the evaluations are presented and discussed by the board of directors and management as well as by the individual project teams and departments. Through this discussion, a common understanding of the situation, the topics and the perceived digital maturity is developed. The analysis can be designed as an online survey and is, ideally, based on the seven action fields of digital transformation.

The answers to the questions and its subsequent evaluation in the form of lists, bar charts or spider diagrams produces meaningful results for discussion.

The evaluation enables the organization to answer many important questions such as:

  • How far have we progressed with our digital transformation?
  • Why do we assess our progress as low/medium/high? Have we started or already completed projects in all action fields? Where is potential present?
  • Where do we have to do more or show a higher degree of maturity?

In this way, the maturity analysis provides the content for the first strategy development meeting.

A spider diagram shows the organization’s assessment of itself and where there is obvious potential and opportunities (www.digital-strategy-check.com) (Marc K Peter, https://the-digital-transformation-canvas.com/).

The Digital Strategy Check is based on the 7 action fields of digital transformation and helps to determine your digital maturity in the form of a maturity analysis based on 24 strategic questions of the ACT method – extended workshop canvas. If, during the strategy process, larger organizations or small businesses want to take the opinions of their employees into account, several employees can carry out the strategy check. In this way, the organization receives an individual evaluation. Visit www.digital-strategy-check.com to complete your free digital strategy assessment.

In the next blog post, we will discuss step 2 of the transformation method, the workshop canvas for digital transformation.

Strategy questions for the digital age:

  1. How and when did you last determine the digital maturity of your organization?
  2. How big is the gap between aspiration (e.g., as assumed by management) and reality (e.g., as evaluated via your employees?
  3. What actions did you define as a result of the analysis of your digital maturity and subsequent discussions?
