As Chairman of the Board of Directors, you not only lead the Board of Directors, but also the Executive Board. You set the tone for dealing with special situations, monitor liquidity and raise capital, and shape the company's culture, strategy and innovative strength with your leadership. You position the company in the economic environment by communicating with stakeholders. With these and other tasks, you have a great influence on the present and future of the company. The first university-level continuing education program in Switzerland provides board presidents with important tools and enables an exchange of ideas at eye level.

Study Modules

The seminar strengthens existing and prospective board presidents of SMEs through up-to-date knowledge inputs, best-practice exchange with peers and practical application. Participants receive tools and checklists with which they can successfully master current and future challenges.
Day 1 Chairmen Role and Future Viability of the Company

The first day of the seminar deals with the role of the president of the board with regard to the future viability of the company. An important role here is played by the strategy for the ongoing renewal of the company, the assessment of risks, liquidity planning and capital procurement, and strategic partnerships.

  • We find the right form of collaboration with start-ups (e.g. AI)
Day 2 Constructive Leadership Culture and Antifragility

The second day of the seminar focuses on the leadership challenges of the board chair. Dynamics and competence in the board of directors, the formation of meaningful committees, the interface to the CEO or the executive board, the care of the important stakeholders as well as the management of agenda, pending list and minutes play an important role here.

  • We foster a fruitful boardroom culture with constructive critical discussions.
  • We establish effective working committees and integrate their work into decision making.
  • We build a trusting leadership relationship with the CEO
  • We reduce information asymmetry and ensure an informed board of directors
  • We identify and cultivate key stakeholders
  • We manage agenda, pending list and minutes
Day 3 Special Situations and Crisis Management

The third day of the seminar focuses on dealing with special situations such as defending against a cyber attack or a social media shitstorm, the successful implementation of a merger, restructuring, reorganization, etc. The focus is on the class’ own cases for which target-oriented solutions are developed together with experts. Among other things, this involves crisis management and crisis communication.

  • We prepare for the unpredictable and know where to find support.
  • We approach special situations consciously and know when/where a task force is needed
  • We communicate competently internally/externally and can avoid typical communication traps
  • We find solutions for practical special situations in the group

The seminar “Competence for the Board Presidency” addresses typical board presidency topics and provides practical solutions. You will benefit from a cross-industry exchange and deepen your practical and theoretical know-how.

The university-based continuing education program focuses on board members in SMEs and supports them in creating sustainable success for their companies.

Applied Assignments

Following the seminar, participants can independently solve a practice-relevant knowledge transfer task with which they can earn 3 ECTS credits and receive the “Competence for the Board Presidency” certification from Rochester-Bern Executive Programs. The certification of achievement is voluntary. Participants who complete the seminar without a certification of achievement will receive a confirmation of attendance.

Target Audience/Requirements

The seminar is aimed at:

  • Current and future (sur dossier*) BoD chairpersons
  • Current and future (sur dossier*) Vice-Chairmen/ Chairwomen of the BoD

Sur dossier candidates: future (sur dossier*) BoD vice presidents with a suitable background and a letter of recommendation from a BoD president.

Degree

After successful completion of the seminar “Competence for the Board Presidency” and the practice-relevant examination task, all participants receive a course confirmation of their “BoD Expertise” from Rochester-Bern.

Alumni/ae of the CAS Board of Directors receive an updated grade sheet as well as a new certificate “Certified Board Member” from Rochester-Bern with the addition: The services were rendered within the framework of the CAS in General Management Board of Directors study program conducted by Rochester-Bern Executive Programs and the seminar “Competence for the Board Presidency”.

Program Fees

The fee for the three-day specialization seminar is CHF 3,500.

The fee includes seminar participation, electronic teaching materials, lunch on course days, a dinner on the first evening, refreshments during breaks, and confirmation of participation with recognition of ECTS credits. Participants must cover their accommodation expenses.
