Five Things to Do in Rochester as an EMBA Student (With or Without Kids)

Studying for my MBA in Rochester was demanding, to be completely honest, but it also gave me the chance to discover the city and enjoy time outside the classroom. I love that Rochester has activities that are perfect for when I want to go alone to clear my head and others that I can share with my daughter when she visits.

Here are five activities that really enriched my experience:

1. Trail Walk Ending at Ontario Beach

Walking the trail to Ontario Beach is one of my favorite solo activities. After a long week of classes, it’s the perfect way to get some space and recharge. I love the quiet moments of walking and thinking before arriving at the lake to take in the view. It’s something I do just for myself.

2. Spend time at Ontario Beach

The beach itself is also a great place to visit. When I’m by myself, I like to sit near the water with a coffee or stroll along the sand. But it’s a whole different experience when my kid is with me. She enjoys the playgrounds, running around, and splashing in the water. It’s nice to have one place that feels calm when I go by myself but turns into a lively outing when we go together.

3. Eat at The Owl House

The Owl House quickly became one of my favorite restaurants in Rochester. It feels like eating in someone’s cozy home, and the food is fantastic, especially since they have so many gluten-free options. It’s comforting to go there alone, but it’s also a great spot to share a meal with classmates or bring my kid. The relaxed atmosphere makes it welcoming for adults and children alike.

4. Visit the Strong National Museum of Play

The Strong is honestly one of the most fun places in Rochester. Watching my daughter’s excitement and playing and discovering new exhibits with her turned the visit into a special memory for both of us.

5. A Night Out with Elvis-Style Music

Not everything is kid-friendly, and that’s okay. After a busy week of classes, I sometimes go out with classmates to a pub with live music. One of the highlights was seeing Luca Foresta and the Electro Kings perform. They play fun, high-energy music, and it’s the perfect way to relax. It’s an experience I enjoy purely at Jake’s Pub.
