This dynamic presents companies with a key question: How do you develop an IT strategy that provides direction, incorporates relevant developments, and at the same time prevents you from hastily following every trend? This is precisely the question I explored in the CAS Digital Acceleration & AI program offered by Rochester-Bern Executive Programs. The CAS not only gave me a deeper understanding of artificial intelligence and digital transformation; above all, it showed me just how rapidly change is actually taking place and how many topics that seemed futuristic only a short time ago are already becoming reality. This has transformed my understanding of strategy: In a dynamic environment, strategy must provide direction while remaining adaptable.
Many companies work with extensive strategy documents that are created and revised in multi-year cycles. In an environment that is constantly changing due to digitalization, artificial intelligence, and new technologies, this approach is increasingly reaching its limits. Today, strategies must not only provide direction but also be flexible enough to incorporate new developments and derive concrete courses of action from them.
In my practical work, I have therefore developed a modular IT strategy.
It is based on a strategic architecture with a few stable elements: vision, mission, value proposition, and operating model. In addition, topic-specific design principles (guidelines) are regularly reviewed and adjusted as needed. This creates a framework that provides direction without sacrificing the necessary flexibility.
The CAS provided models, methods, and insights from instructors and fellow students that were directly incorporated into my strategy work. A key insight was that AI topics are, first and foremost, about processes, data, and empowerment. Before technical solutions can have a lasting impact, processes must be understood and simplified, and responsibilities must be clarified. The handling of data (data management) must also be uniformly understood and regulated. Furthermore, it is important to empower employees both in working with AI and in understanding its limitations. Only by building on this foundation can sustainable solutions and efficiency gains be achieved.
For me, the greatest value of the CAS lay in its immediate practical application. The strategic architecture we developed now serves as the foundation for the further development of our IT strategy. It combines solid guiding principles with concrete areas of action and measures. As a result, the practical work did not remain an isolated academic project but became a concrete contribution to strategic development.
What I found particularly valuable in the CAS was the exchange with the instructors and participants from various industries. The CAS in Digital Acceleration & AI has permanently transformed my understanding of digitalization, AI, and strategy. My most important insight: In a volatile world, companies don’t always need more detailed plans, but rather clear guidelines, robust processes, reliable data, and the ability to continuously refine their strategy.
It is precisely this combination of solid fundamentals, personal reflection, and immediate applicability that makes the program particularly valuable to me.
