CAS to EMBA – The Degrees explained

Diplomas and graduation hats are held up to the sky
CAS, DAS, MAS, MBA and EMBA, how do the degrees differ and which of these continuing education formats suits me best? Here you will get an overview.

CAS – Certificate of Advanced Studies

CAS means “Certificate of Advanced Studies”. It is a part-time continuing education course for which at least ten ECTS credits must be achieved. In a CAS, participants acquire knowledge on a topic, a particular area, or are introduced to such knowledge. The format is aimed at people who have a bachelor’s degree or a university degree and are in the middle of their professional life. The course includes one to two semesters, which corresponds to a duration of between half a year and a full year. In most cases, CAS can be credited toward a DAS and ultimately an MAS. CAS continuing education courses are among the most popular continuing education courses for people with a university degree and accumulated professional experience.

Rochester-Bern offers the following CAS programs:

Some of these CAS can be credited to our DAS and EMBA programs.

DAS – Diploma of Advanced Studies

DAS means Diploma of Advanced Studies. It is a part-time advanced studies program for which a minimum of 30 – 40 ECTS must be achieved. As a rule, this program is aimed at people with a university degree and with professional experience. This means that a certain amount of practical experience is required in addition to the university degree. The course includes one to five semesters, which corresponds to a duration of between half a year and two years. A DAS is often composed of several CAS and can usually be extended with a CAS and a master module (master thesis) to a MAS.

Rochester-Bern offers the following DAS programs:

Both DAS programs can be credited to our EMBA program.

MAS – Master of Advanced Studies

MAS means Master of Advanced Studies. It is a part-time continuing education program for which a minimum of 60 ECTS must be achieved. MAS programs deepen existing knowledge and are aimed at experienced specialists or managers or at people with a university degree who want to qualify in a specific field. The course usually comprises four semesters, which corresponds to a duration of one to two years. An MAS is often composed of various CAS and DAS as well as a master’s module (master’s thesis).

Rochester-Bern offers the following MAS:

MBA – Master of Business Administration

MBA means Master of Business Administration. It is a generalist and international education that trains and develops both professional and social skills of the participants and prepares them for strategic management tasks. These are often full-time programs lasting one to two years. There are also part-time and distance learning variants. Successful completion includes at least 60 ECTS credits. An MBA is often made up of DAS and CAS programs. For MBA programs, two to three years of professional experience are usually sufficient for admission. As a result, the average age in MBA study groups is often lower than in EMBAs.

Rochester-Bern offers a program that provides a dual degree in the form of an EMBA and MBA, thus incorporating the advantages of both formats:

EMBA – Executive Master of Business Administration

EMBA means Executive Master of Business Administration. Like the MBA, the EMBA is a generalist and international education that trains and develops both professional and social competencies of the participants and enhances their strategic leadership skills. In contrast to the MBA, the target audience of the EMBA has even more professional and leadership experience. Candidates should be able to demonstrate at least five, and not infrequently even ten, years of experience when applying for a place on the program. EMBA students are therefore often people from management, department heads or those responsible for business units. The average age is also higher than for an MBA. The study model of an EMBA varies. With some providers, the study program consists of a sequence of more or less freely selectable modules, consisting of certificate courses (CAS). This allows for the flexible composition of a personal program over time.

Rochester-Bern offers a program that provides a dual degree in the form of an EMBA and MBA, thus incorporating the advantages of both formats:
